Enya, Ireland's best selling solo-artist, has been presented with an honorary degree.

The singer, whose real name is Eithne Ni Bhraonain, was conferred with a Degree of Doctor of Music.

She was among six people conferred at the National University of Ireland, Galway for their achievements in law, music and literature.

As well as the Donegal singer, these included Irish traditional musician Nicholas Carolan, South African Chief Justice Pius Langa and Limerick-born Reuters news agency chairman Niall FitzGerald.

Other honorary recipients included long-time American Ireland fund member Bill Walsh and founding member of the Irish arts association Aosdana, Jane O'Leary.

The ceremony followed last week's honorary conferring of world renowned folklorist Tom Munnelly.

Enya ranks alongside the most successful female artists in the world, having sold over 70 million albums, with hits including Orinoco Flow. She has also won four Grammy awards for Best New Age album.
