Tracy
Enya's music is often described as New Age, but that hardly says it all.
With complex compositions and vocals sung in several different languages,
the Irish native has won 3 Grammys as well as an Oscar nomination.
She also has sold an astounding 70 million records worldwide. Her new
release, Amarantine, hit the stores in November and already has gone platinum.
Enya, welcome to our Second Cup Café.
Enya
Thank you.
Tracy
It's such a pleasure to have you here.
Enya
Thank you for asking.
Tracy
I think of a lot of people recognize your sound. Right when
they hear it, how did you come up with such a unique beautiful sound?
Enya
It's the work I do with the producer, Nicky Ryan. He had this idea of
getting to use my voice like an instrument. I would sing songs, but
then he builds up with my voice on harmonies and even on the sounds of
the music. It's this kind of a build-up and it's very difficult to know
what suits each song. So, each time for us, it's like trial and error in the
studio.
Tracy
It's a process.
Enya
Yes. It is. Yeah.
Tracy
How long does it take? [ Enya giggles ] How much work goes into one song?
Enya
Well. It's 5 years since the last album, but on this album, Amarantine,
we worked on it for 2 years.
Tracy
For 2 years.
Enya
Which, for some people, it's a long time. Yes. [ giggles ]
Tracy
Yes. And you actually invented a new language for several of the songs?
Enya
Yes. Yes. When we worked on the soundtrack with Peter Jackson, the director on
Lord of the Rings, I ended up singing in Elvish, which was beautiful.
It's a fictional language that Tolkien created. So, my lyricist, Roma Ryan,
decided to write a fictional language to suit this album and it's called
Loxian language.
Tracy
Loxian language.
Enya
Yes.
Tracy
Can you say, "I love you." in Loxian?
Enya
Not really, but I can say a little. It's "Syoombraya", is 'where the
water..the water shows the hidden heart.' That's the first line that she wrote.
Tracy
Oh. It's beautiful! It's beautiful!
Enya
Mmm.
Tracy
Alright. So, now you're going to perform Amarantine?
Enya
Yes, I am.
Tracy
Alright. Take it away.
Enya
Thank you.
Tracy
Ladies and gentlemen, Enya.
[ Enya performs "Amarantine", leaving out the third verse. ]
Tracy
Thank you so much. That was absolutely beautiful. Thank you.
