A

acajou
Acajou is known as the cashew tree and it is also the name of the fruit it yields. It is also a French word meaning mahogany tree.

Africus
Based on Roman mythology, the term, Africus, was used to personify the wind that came in from the southwest. The continent of Africa was named after Africus, since it is located southwest of Italy.

Aldebaran
One of the brightest stars in the night sky, this Red giant star is located in the constellation Taurus, 68 light-years from Earth. Also known as the Eye of the bull, Its name is derived from the Arabic word, Al Dabaran, meaning "the follower".

amaranthine
There are different meanings to this word.  One, it resembles the plant called amaranth.  Second, it is an imaginary flower of purplish red color that never fades.

Amarantine
Poets often use this word to describe an everlasting flower. The reason why the album is called "Amarantine" is because Enya had liked the imagery of an "everlasting flower" and the title was chosen to mean everlasting.

Angel's tears
"Angel's tears" refers to flowers in the species, Narcissus triandrus.  An example would be daffodils.

Avalon
A legendary island somewhere in the British Isles.  It was believed to be the place where King Arthur had died.

Ariel
One of the moons of Uranus.

The capital of ancient Babylonia in Mesopotamia.

Bali
An island located in southern Indonesia.

Bard
An ancient Celtic minstrel poet who composed works about legendary chieftains and heroes.

Bissau
The capital of Guinea-Bissau, located in the western part of Africa.

Boadicea
Also known as Boudicca, she was a British queen of the Iceni, a Celtic tribe, as well as other Celtic tribes.  In 60 A.D., she led a rebellion against the Romans, and annihilated the cities of Colchester, London, and Verulamium (St. Albans).  But when she was defeated by the Romans, she poisoned herself.

Boreas
In Greek mythology, he was the god of the north wind.

An edible, trumpet-shaped mushroom that is yellow to orange in color, and sometimes fragrant.

In Roman mythology, she was the goddess of donkeys, horses, and mules.

The "island of the moon", in the song, Orinoco Flow, refers to the island country, Madagascar.

Isles of Ebony
The "Isles of Ebony" in Orinoco Flow doesn't mean an island called Ebony.  Rather, it was a place Roma had made up.  Ebony is her daughter's name.

A blue-violet color.

One of elvish kingdoms in J.R.R. Tolkien's, The Lord of the Rings.

Loxian
Loxian is a fictional language created by Enya's lyricist, Roma Ryan. The idea of inventing this new language started when Enya and Roma struggled to find the right language for the song, "Water Shows The Hidden Heart". They tried working the song in English, Gaelic, and Latin, but none of them seem to work well with the melody. The main influence for the new language came from Enya and Roma's work on the songs, "May It Be" and "Aníron", from the film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Both of these songs are featured in Elvish, one of the many fictional languages created by author, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Miss Clare is actually a fictional character from the works of British author, Dora Jessie Saint (a former teacher), also known as "Miss Read". Some of her novels inclue Fairacre , Thrush Green Two, No Holly for Miss Quinn, and Miss Clare Remembers.

Saint Patrick
St. Patrick is a Catholic saint.  He is well-known for starting Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century AD.  As a teenager, he was a slave in Ireland.  Six years later, he escaped and fled to Gaul (now France), where he then became a monk. In 432, he returned to Ireland as a missionary and became successful in converting the many Celtic tribes to Christianity.  Many folk tales say that he drove out all snakes out of Ireland, and used shamrocks to teach about the Holy Trinity, but these tales seemed to be a myth, even today.

A sandman is a character in fairy tales and folklore. He makes children go to sleep by sprinkling sand in their eyes.

Sappho Comet
The "Sappho Comet" mentioned in the song, China Roses, is not actually a comet, but a hummingbird, a Red-tailed Comet.

sea of Clouds
The "sea of Clouds" mentioned in the song, Orinoco Flow, refers to the moon.

shepherd moons
Two tiny moons, formerly numbered 1980S26 and 1980S27, and recently named Epimethens and Pandora, that orbit the outer ring of Saturn. They work together to keep the particles of the ring together.
